Tony Kushner's The Illusion to be performed at the Boston
Center for the Arts
BOSTON:
Company One announced today that it will produce Tony Kushner's
free adaptation of Pierre Corneille's The Illusion, at the
Boston Center for the Arts' Black Box Theater, 539 Tremont
St., Boston. Performances will run Thursday through Saturday
at 8pm and Sunday at 2pm. Tickets cost $18 and $15 for students
and seniors, and may be purchased in advance by calling the
BCA box office at 617-426-2787 (617-426-ARTS).
Tony
Kushner, the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning author
of Angels in America, triumphs with this free adaptation of
this 17th century fairytale-fable which was first spun by
classical dramatist Pierre Corneille under the title L'illusion
Comique. An enchanting argument for the power of theatrical
imagination over reality, The Illusion weaves obsession, caprice,
romance, and murder, fact and fiction, into an enticing exploration
of the greatest illusion of all - love.
"Kushner
has a gift for weaving philosophy and witty storytelling together,
for making ideas breath," proclaims Dan Hulbert of the Atlanta
Constitution. D.J.R. Bruckner of The New York Times calls
Kushner's adaptation, "a wise and merry piece of magic that
captures the soul of Corneille's play and the imaginations
of its audiences." Hap Erstein of The Washington Times calls
The Illusion a "touching celebration of theater," and Jeremy
Gerard of the Daily Variety declares "[The Illusion] is exactly
the kind of reinvention that keeps classic theater alive."
Company
One's The Illusion promises to be as hilarious and engaging
as their wildly successful Summer 1999 production of Picasso
at the Lapin Agile.
